Fireglow bulbs - energy saving alternatives?

Quite simply, I have an electric fire (which is never used, but turned on to make the room feel warmer :rotfl:) which uses 2x 60w bulbs.

Ideally, I'd love to buy some sort of energy saving bulb which emits the same red fireglow colour, and makes the foil things spin round.

Is this even possible? :o

Does the foil thing (sorry, forgotten the proper name) above the light still spin?

If so, I might hit eBay for some cheapy 9w spiral bulbs.

It's an oldish electric fire, and the heat from the bulbs is used to rotate the metal foil. The foil then give off a fire effect on the glass stones above it.

  • The foil rotor will not rotate with a energy saving bulb, there is not enough heat produced, they rely on the rising hot air to rotate. If you want the flame effect you are stuck with the 60W bulbs, could try 40W to save some energy but again the heat is probably not enough.

You can get red fluorescent bulbs if you are not concerned about the lack of flame effect, check they are not too large to fit in the space :
