Engine Oil Question - Help please?

If someone (not saying who:o) let their engine oil run so low that the light came on, how much oil do you think would it need to make it driveable again.
You might find you need a new engine, not just £10 of oil. Unless you're lucky enough to own a car with an oil level light instead of pressure one, by the time the light comes on, the damage has been done. If you've been driving it around with the light on, you've pretty much wrecked the engine.Conor
