Poor Contacts In TV Remote Control.

We have a Panasonic 32" tv. with a remote control which has poor contacts.

It is about three years old, and a couple of months ago, the buttons on the remote that were used the most, eg.programme buttons 1,2,3,4 plus the volume up / down, needed to be pressed a good few times to register.

I replaced with new batteries, (not the ones from the bits and bobs box in the shed ) !, to no avail.

I then split the remote in half, and was pleased that there were no springs or loose bits inside. There was just a rubber mat with contacts attached, and the circuit board. I cleaned the contacts and the board with a cotton bud and meths, and clipped it together again.

Everything was then as good as when it was new.

Sadly, a couple of months on, the old problem has returned.

Can anyone advise, if after cleaning, I should have given it a light coating, of super conductivity do-dah, or whatever.

Thanks in anticipation.

Don't waste any more time on it obtain the remote number it will be in the instruction manual or may be inside the battery compartment or failing that the TV Model and E bay is a good place to obtain a replacement.
If not keen to do that then google search with the remote information it will give other sources to purchase.

I'm going from memory here .. but I would say don't use meths! ... I think ordinary meths (Methyl Alcohol) will leave a slight deposit behind as it evaporates which may get slightly sticky after a while .. which may be why you still have a problem.

Some of this would be better .. 1,1,1-trichloroethane .. might be hard to get hold of though ..
  • Use IPA alcohol chemist have huge bottles of the stuff take a 50ml bottle and ask for some for cleaning use. Else go to Maplins and buy some, 500ml about £4.
