Can confirm, as alisonp wrote, chancel repair liability is a one off fee and lasts upto 25 years that you stay in that house. If you move to another place you can not transfer it, equally you can not transfer to the buyers of your house. But it is a one off.
I made a one off payment for chancel liability insurance. The premium depends on to what value you are insuring against. I insured against the CoE going after me for £250k and it cost me £50.
However under the Land Registration Act 2002 the CoE are required to register their interest in affected properties at the land registery by Oct 2013 after which time the majority of buyers should not be affected. However if you are affected the premium would be much higher.
The whole thing in annoying swizzle that the government should have resolved quicker. In the meantime we just need to line the pockets of these insurance companies. I wonder if the insurance companies have sufficient assets to pay out in the event of a widespread set of claims by the CoE anyway?0 -
Telephone and internet connections etc can rack up fast as the rates seem to vary wildly depending on what promotions are going on with the companies, but can easily cost over £100. (We were quoted £170 to get a BT line in plus about £100 for sky install last summer).
We moved a few months ago and BT charged us £125 to 'reconnect' as the line in our property had been taken over by some other provider so they couldn't use it. APPARENTLY. The BT thing is just random and depends on which company the last occupants were with - it's worth trying to find out as it end up being easier to move to that company as we had a total nightmare switching back to BT. Likewise Sky would have cost about the same but luckily it was already installed and our box worked when we plugged it in at the new place so avoided that. I think for standard Sky the charge would have been £80, probably more if you have extras.what do you mean, I have to pay back my student loan?!?0
