HSBC Bank and foreign cheques

Phoned them today as I was waiting for a cheque from the USA to clear in my account, only to be told that they had sent it back to me because it was out of date. I wouldn't mind if the cheque was actually out of date but you'd think that most people working in a bank would have the common sense to know that Americans write the date in a different format! e.g. 1st of december would be written 12/01/2008. Have now got to wait for it to come and take it into the branch to explain! Even the person I spoke to on the phone was surprised that they had sent the cheque back for that reason!
