Best credit card for a friend EGG or HSBC

Hi folks

My friend is after a new credit card to make purchases off the internet. He will pay off the balance in full each month and does not anticipate spending that much on it say 300quid a month. Ideally he would like cashback but will not consider the american express card due to it not being accepted everywhere and does not want the hassle of having 2 cards.

Internet security and fraud issues are important to him and he is concerned about the online nature of the Egg card so would appreciate some reassurance from forum members on the Egg card.

He is also considering the HSBC card as well as he is a member of that bank.

We would appreciate any advice on the above mentioned cards and additional advice on alternative cards if applicable.

Thanks in advance

    Internet security has two aspects:
    • Online banking. All CCs have now online access that is very reliable if you are careful and follow a few tips. Most of cards have also telephone banking, Egg doesn't AFAIK. I use only online banking with all my cards.
    • Online shopping. I think there are more risks here than with online banking, although all CC providers offer some protection (free). If this is his main concern, he could consider Cahoot webcard . See also Free safer system for online spending and discussion. Another new systems for safer online shopping are now on trial: Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode. However, not all CC insures and very few retailers joined yet (HSBC did).
