Speaking to the Royal Mail does no good. You have to do it in writing, on their form, and pay a fee. And (from memory) provide recent ID relating to the old address. But if it's a long time since you lived there it's overkill anyway.

I had the same sort of problem with HSBC when I got the security questions wrong over the telephone.
The easiest and quickest way to sort it out is to go into your local branch with any statements you have, or your bank statements showing the minimum payments being made, also take your photo id such as driving licence or passport and proof of your new address ie utility bills, they then should be able to sort it out for you without any problems.0
