My wife was with powergen and didn't keep up with her payments. They installed a meter and set it to charge her over the normal rate to pay off her debt. When the debt was payed, she switched to British gas (still paying over the normal rate)
Anyway this was 6 years ago and she has been buying cards and putting them in ever since. As she is not so good with finances, i have been going through everything to make sure everthing is in order. When i looked at her British gas statement, it said she owed £650.
I phoned up and enquired to how she has acrued any debt because she pre pays for her electric and they said they will start an investigation. After 6 months i phoned up today and they said. Its because the meter hasn't been turned up since 1999.
Isn't it thier job to turn it up or notify us that it needs turning up?. I didn't even realise that they needed manually turning up until last year because i have never had a meter.

You might be able to appeal against this. It was hardly her fault if she didnt know about the increase.

Maybe good idea to get in touch with energywatch over this and see if they can sort it out
  • i think by rights they should write this off if you complain through energywatch, as long as you had no idea that there was ever a debt outstanding on the bills. i have a prepayment meter job background.
Converted comper to MSE. Thank you for all your answers!
