Laptop PCMCIA

I have a laptop with a Xircom PCMCIA card with 2 slots.
One for a 56k modem connection the other for an Ethernet lan connection both via a dongle adapter.
The modem connection works fine. The Ethernet connection though always says
“network cable unplugged” I have tried a couple of dongle adapters but no change
I have tried the cable with another laptop that has an ethernet connection built in and it works fine.
Any ideas please

Sorry perhaps I didn’t explain my problem very well. I’m actually wanting to use the Ethernet connection to connect to the internet via a BT 2100 voyager wireless router.
I am able to connect using the wireless setup but I would like to also have the option of using the wired connection
