British Gas Central Heating Quote

Options
Hello all,

It seems that the general consensus is that BG quotes are the highest out there. However I have just received a quote of £3600 to install my central heating. I'm guessing the cheapest I could get the work done would be £2500-3000 so the BG quote doesn't seem too bad to me. This includes...

Ideal Isar HE 30 Boiler & 5 Radiators
Also there is no central heating there at the moment so the installation includes all the pipe-work, including bringing the gas from the gas meter to the boiler.
It obviously includes the electrical work
It also includes a year's maintanence contract

Pretty much all the posts I've read have been negative about BG but has anyone out there actual had a bad experience with them?
Are the specific advantages/disadvantages in going with BG, i.e. as they are more expensive am I paying for anything other than the name?
As a side point I've never seen Ideal Boilders recommended (or even mentioned), does anyone have any experience of them?

Thanks

  • I have the BG man coming tomorrow to quote me for a new boiler. The BG website says £300 off boilers ordered before 31 Jan.

The problem I have is getting someone else to give me a quote so that I can compare. Apparently they are all too busy with boiler repairs and fitting new ones is not as profitable! Can this be true?
  • I'm not sure the "£300 off boilers" really counts for much as BG seem to charge £300 more anyway. However if you are going to use BG then the £300 saving can be real money. If you get them to come round and sign up to their January deal you have 7 days to cancel which might give you enough time to get some other comparative quotes.
  • I too had problem getting people to quote back in Oct. 3 companies came and never bothered to get back to me with price - bad business or what! I had BG in but found them really expensive compared to others, they wanted 7k whereas local companies (that bothered to get back to me) wanted on average 4k to do exactly same work. They were also offering money off boilers back in Oct so I guess they must offer this fairly regulary.
