British Gas Online

I am having real problems with this company - my last bill was nearly 800.00 as they tried to tell me that several years ago they had an error in my meter reading and it had come to light and I had to pay it. Needless to say I did not and argued until they cleared it. This quarterly bill is 535.00 - I have been in touch with them and am awaiting an explanation.
Why do these companies keep trying to rip people off?

? In what way are you being ripped off? It seems that you are the one who is not paying them for energy you have used.
  • Not really - I do check meter readings and they could not provide any evidence to prove a mistake had been made. I have been with them since I moved into my house. It is a con - and for anyone else they try this on with they try to tell you they can help sort the debt out if you go onto prepayments.

Do you honestly think that they would 'invent' a bill?

That is a criminal offence and someone could get jail for such an offence - and there are enough 'whistleblowers' in a company to make sure it happened!

They believe(mistakenly or not) that you owe that money, but sometimes it is just not worth the effort to chase a relatively small amount so they write it off.
