Is there a tomato famine?

I ask merely because yesterday evening I was perusing the goods in Morrison's and I noticed that the fresh vine tomatoes, which were 99p before Christmas, are now £1.39. I also noted that Napoli tinned tomatoes are nearly £1 for a standard tin (440g I think.)

(I must add for the benefit of regular correspondents that in no way do I think that this is scam or a rip-off or a blinking liberty.)

I think it was mentioned before somewhere on the forums that there was a shortage - a few months ago the prices of tinned tomatoes and tomato puree increased and it was also difficult to find puree in stock.

Loads of Napoli toms at Asda - on offer 2 for a quid (plum or chopped).

plus coupled with this businesses may be trying to make cuts so they could have increaesed they're operating costs

ahhh I love tomatoes! Morrisons cheap tinned tomatoes have gone up 5p since the summer (nearly 20%!) Aldi sell them for 28p

Part of it is down to the exchange rate, although it has recovered a bit, it still has a direct effect.
