Hi Natahsa, I am a newbie here!
My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with UC 2 years ago and has tried many treatments.
Also relevant to this part of the board as we have just been awarded DLA for her
Fire away and I will answer any questions that I can

Hi choccycat
it was a painful route to get my daughter diagnosed. She had been ill for some time - 10 toilet visits a day, lot of blood loss, mucus, tiredness and very pale etc
Our GP wasn't much help and prescribed medicines to try and bulk her stools. We then went private and tried diet elimination - dairy / wheat etc without any success.
Things got to a head the day after my daughters 4th birthday when she took violently ill with a rotovirus (which was actually the best thing to happen!)
We took her straight to A&E - she was so underweight and the combination of sickness (caused by the virus) and the toilet problems made her seriously ill.
She spent some time in the IC unit and we were then transferred to the gastro team and put under the top consultant there. He came to speak to us after looking at the notes and informed us that our daughter had UC. He was so confident of this he was prepared to say it before scoping her. Needless to say the scopes confirmed this anyway. At the last count she has now had 5 scopes.
She has been through a difficult road to get to where she is just now. We are now at the surgery stage which is likely to be within the next 3 weeks.
Our story is a long one and I could go on all day about things we have tried - I am more than happy to answer any questions. As I said she was succesfull with the DLA application - although the process was pretty daunting and frustrating,
The only advice I can give you is - if you have any suspicion or concerns get it checked and do not take the word of your GP - ask for a second opinion
It is a difficult condition to diagnose and in most cases may not be what you think anyway.:j
Any questions fire away and don't feel embarrassed about asking. There is still a stigma about talking about body functions

Well I was diagnosed was IBS 4 years ago as I had bad diarrhoea and pains on my left side of my admomen. This now only flares up during stress. This year I have had very little stress but my flare ups of diarrhoea have got more often and now I often have fecal incontinence which is usually not a prob as I am near a loo. But I have now had continous diarrhoea for 2 weeks
the immodium has helped today. Benn to doctors today for blood tests, will give stool sample. There is no blood just mucus. Also doctor tested my glucose?????Interesting?! I'm 22
I also have fibromayalgia.

I have had UC for approx 7 years now. It started instantly one day. I had a sudden sharp stomach pain. I went to the loo and (pebbledashed)! Then I found I was losing blood -mucas which worried me. I didn't want to go to the Docs as I really thought I had cancer. Anyway, I plucked up courage and went. he asked me a few questions and sent me to hospital, he said he thought it was UC. I went to hospital for tests and they confirmed UC. Since then I've tried numerous tablet, foams, enemas I find them all useless. The hospital treat you like a guinea pig as there is no cure at the moment. I'm done with being pulled around. All I take now are my iron tablets - 6 a day, and get on with it. Not easy though!
People just don't seem to understand what Colitis consists of.

my mum and brothers have this, brother just had surgery and mum has a pouch. not nice bless her she is often ill and my bro is only 27!:(
I havent had any problems but am getting a little worried & wonder whether i should ask dr to check to ease my mind? they say its not hereditry but seems to be in my family!
I get really bad pain in my tummy, feels like bubbles exploding, i also get periods of soft stools and then sometimes constipation
I also get sore.
sorry if TMI cant really talk to mum 2 much as dont want to worry her.
Could this be the cause of my stomach pain? its really getting me down.
I am trying to get to dr but i can only make appointments on the day and by the time they open i am at work 1hrs drive away!0
