tax credit question

My partner was laid off just before Christmas. I phoned the tax credit people last Friday to tell them. As I expected, I was told that it would not make any difference to payments for rest of this year as they would take into account our earnings up til now and they asked me to estimate what our earnings will be at end of tax year - I had to estimate what OH will earn assuming he gets another job in next few weeks! My query is this - our normal monthly tc payment (£42) was paid in as usual at the beginning of this week, but on checking bank account I see that a further payment of £28 has been paid today also. Not sure if this is a mistake. According to the lady I spoke to there would be no difference in payments for the rest of this year. At this time any extra money is very welcome but don't want to end up having to pay them money back.

in the past when i have rang them to make changes, i usually gfet an extra payment a few days later, so maybe that is what yours is..
i am sure somebody will answer you shortly, there are a few people on here who work for tax credits
  • When you report a change of circumstances the system re-calculates your award. Usually it issues a one off payment and splits the remaining entitlement over the remaining weeks. You will probably notice your future payments are a few punds less than normal to balance out the additional payment.
