i have gch and have just got an electric fireplace in the lounge.
this is the one

since i spent most of my time in the lounge when i'm at home it seems more obvious to leave the gch off and and use the electric fireplace. is this the cheapest course of action?

    No.

It costs roughly 4 times more to provide heat using an electric fire than Gas CH.

If you don't need heat in the other parts of the house, simply turn of the heat(radiators) in those rooms but keep CH on in the lounge.
