Return to country after abandoning debt

Options
I realise this post may get a few people upset - those who are working hard to pay off their debts - but I would appreciate any advice.

I left the UK 4 years ago to live in Japan. I gave some of my creditors my address in Asia and I made a few payments whilst away toward my various debts (totalling about 15,000) I also made Lloyds a full and final offer over the phone against the main debt (10k + interest....) Lloyds turned down the offer saying they couldn't accept less than the full amount.

After about a year I got fed up with all the paperwork involved with sending money home and stopped paying. I received letters from Lloyds and their Solicitors, and a court paper from a creditor who took me to the small claims court - it arrived after the court date.

I ignored it all on the advise of various parties who pointed out the monies were not enough to warrant any real action from my creditors given my country of residence and the fact I had no assets or income in the UK. Plus, Japan is a difficult country in which to get a 2nd party to persue non-national debtors.

BUT....now I am back in the UK and have been for just over a year. I have not contacted any of my creditors. I have no idea what my credit history looks like or if I have ccj, bankruptcy orders against me or what. I have a saving account my salary is paid into and have no intention (or desire) to apply for any credit. What I would like to know is whether
(a) any of my creditors can track me down through utility bills, tax or NIC?
(b) will the marks against my record ever dissappear on their own....?????? (c) my partner has just applied for a new credit card and asked for an additional card with my name on; he did not give any details about the additional card holder other than my name. Will the credit card company do any research on my name?
(d) if I do a credit check on my name can I avoid giving them my current address?

Thanks

  • i have abandoned, my chasers to best of my ability. may talk to you more, but will see how replies to my thing goes. dont know if i can help you, but nice to know not alone at least.
  • When applying for additional cards no credit checks are done, you can apply for an additional card in your pets name if you wanted too.

If you are able to sleep at night knowing that you have not repaid your debts then try to avoid all contact with the creditors for at least 6 years, then they can not persue you for the money after that time.
  • Yes, I can sleep well at night. I lose no sleep over owing a multi-million £ institution, with very dubious lending policies a few thousand £. Let's be honest here it is a drop in the ocean to them and if you believe the "interest rates are pushed higher by defaulters." then well...........

Thanks town cryer, you can always drop me a PM. Any experiences gratefully listened to.
