Need some help plz.....currently got a Sony 17' E220 trinitron CRT. Love the monitor but today my woman told me I can buy a TFT.

£200 to spend......+/-£30 maybe..... :rotfl:

I play games, like hl2, doom3, nfsu2, css, bf1942. Other racing games...and watch DVD's.

Do i get a 17' or 19'? What makes do i avoid?

http://www.cclonline.com is a good place for me as its local.

19" Acer AL1916WS (8ms) - £179 ?
19'' Hyundai ImageQuest B91A (8ms) - £220 ?
or Iliyama?

or

17'' Hyundai ImageQuest Q70U (3ms) - £215....

or non of the above, go somewhere else?

 Hmmmm. Currently in the process of buying/looking for one for my parents too.

17" and 19" will both run in the same native resolution, so with a 19" you're just getting it on a 25% bigger screen. Having said that, 19" is very nice, especially for watching movies.

Being a gamer you may want to look at TN panels. These'll have a better response time but much narrower viewing angle. Personally I'm waiting around for the new P-MVA screens due out, basically now.

The ViewSonic VP930 is a little pricey, but the Belinea 10 19 20 uses exactly the same panel and costs around £255. It's an 8ms screen, performs well on ghosting tests I've seen, and also has a huge viewing angle, so great for dvd's. For £255 I don't think you'll find a better monitor.

So my advice would basically be to wait one month, save a little extra. £260 may be pushing a bit too far though, and for that price I can only find it on pixmania (everywhere else is £280ish).

Alternatively, the Samsung SM930BF (£240ish) is a good gaming (TN panel) tft to look at. The ViewSonic VX912 (£230ish, also TN panel I think) is also very good. Try and get the second version it has an 8ms instead of 12ms response time. I'm not sure if you can tell on the box though.

Sorry, most of my recommendations are around the upper area of your budget.

Edit - Oh and the Hyundai Q90U is a very good gaming monitor so I'd imagine the Q70U is probably along the same lines.

I wouldn't recommend the Acer WS model, not heard many good reports about them. Good price, but the quality is slightly lacking compared to their standard 17's.
I would second the recommendation for the Belinea 10 19 20. Seen one in action and it looks fantastic. I have used a Belinea 17" 10 17 15 and this one completely blows it away.

Thx wolfman, is there much benefit to having dvi-d aswel as d-sub?

    My gpu (6600GT) has dvi-d.....

I've posted the same on CCL forum http://forums.cclonline.com/showthread.php?t=2705

DVI gives a slightly sharper picture compared to D-SUB (using the same monitor and VGA card). Worth having if you can afford it, yes, and as you already have a DVI card, getting a DVI monitor is definitely worthwhile. Find out before ordering if the monitor comes with a DVI cable though, as some don't.

The difference won't be hugely noticeable between d-Sub and DVI. DVI will be slightly sharper as rsykes mentioned, plus you should get more accurate colours.

It's something worth getting purely because d-Sub is slowly being phased out.

I've got a Sharp LL172GB which about a year ago was a very good tft. If my parents do get hold of a Belinea 10 19 20 soon, I'll post my thoughts/comparison and a few pics.

    Thx guys....

I went for a Hyundai Q70U which has both D-Sub and DVI-d, had to buy the DVI cable seperate.

This TFT boasts to have a 3ms grey to grey response time. Should be interersting.....gonna plug it all up now :)

    Brilliant monitor.....

Not a ghost in sight, DVD playback is crisp.

Anyone wanting a TFT, I do recommend the Hyundai ImageQuest Q70U.
