Hi matt, I asked that very same question approx 4 months ago and it turned into that long thread that you've posted on! Not sure I got many answers to that question as such, but never mind!

I would recommend the Reader's Digest DIY manual - it's always on offer somewhere so you'll definately get a copy for a tenner. It's very good cos it covers all the basics of DIY - all the things you're too embarrassed to ask...!

Apart from that, all the tips I've picked up have either been on here, or by copious amounts of trial and error...!

  • ok cheers! that thread is a great read BTW :D

i already have a decent DIY manual, but ideally wanted another one more specifically related to a house renovation. ie - tips and advice on order of works, etc.

i think i'll just have a trip to the library and pick up what i can!

One of the best things here is that if you ask, someone will always be able to point you in the right direction. Occassionally 2 people will point you in different directions but it doesn't happen too often :D
  • Sarah Beeny has a book called Property Ladder, A Developers Bible published by Cassel is quite thorough in how to renovate a house, it has a good Schedule of Works checklist too............ no doubt you'll be able to pick one up cheap nowadays!
  • I can never understand why people need a DIY manual when you can view it all for free online- http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/ then if you get stuck you can ask questions in forums.
  • Some of us are old enough to remember a time when we didn't have the internet, old habits die hard....... and I'd rather have a book sat on top of my tool box than my lap-top when the rubble is flying around!

I've done some renovating in the past and as well as various actual renovation books (who's titles I can't recall - sorry!) a good one is the B&Q 'You Can Do It' book.

I now work there, but haven't actually seen it on the shelves lately, but you can deffo borrow it from a library if not.

IIRC, I borrowed a heck of a lot of my renov books from there.

    Good luck!
  • Hi there

If you want to consider saving energy and water bills at the same time as renovating, I've done it and posted some tips here:
