My daughter is currently having piano lessons in Cardiff, the drive amongst other things is taking its toll, we wondered if anyone can recommend a piano teacher in Cowbridge/Bridgend etc area ? She loves her lessons and is only 6.

Hi blackcoffee I live just outside Bridgend and my friend Rhian who is a primary school teacher is also a very good piano teacher. I will contact her and get her number and get back to you. She lives in Sarn.

You could try contacting the local LEA music service, as they may well be able to recommend someone:

Bridgend Instrumental Music Team,
Education and Leisure Services,
Bridgend County Council,
Sunnyside,
Bridgend,
CF31 4AR

Tel: 01656 642658

Or you could try posting a message on the forums at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music website.

Or musicteachers.co.uk

Or you could search the Incorporated Society of Musicians' teachers register here

Many piano teachers will be prepared to travel to your home (if you have a piano obviously!). I teach clarinet and saxophone, and have never taught from home as I much prefer to travel to the pupil's house (I know I'll arrive and leave on time that way!). Don't be afraid to ask what experience and qualifications the prospective teacher has - Grade 8 should be the absolute minimum, but preferably the teacher should have a relevant diploma or a music degree. There are many BAD teachers around, as a lot of people think they're qualified just because they can find their way around an instrument, and piano is probably the worst one for this. I'd also recommend that perhaps you could get in touch with the Royal Welsh College in Cardiff. The piano department there is particularly good, and most post-graduate students teach to supplement their income.

I'd also recommend that you arrange a trial lesson with your chosen teacher first. A good teacher won't have a problem with this as it will give both parties a chance to see if they'll develop a good pupil/teacher relationship.

Sorry to bombard you with so much information, I've just had a bit of experience in clearing up the musical mess left by bad teachers! Hope you find someone suitable.

Hi,

I may or may not be too late, however, I am a piano teacher living in Pencoed. I teach mostly evenings and weekends and would be delighted to speak to you about your daughter's lessons if you so wish. Most of my students are very young, so am more than used to 6 year olds :-)

Either email me on lizy2@talktalk.net or give me call on 07854 460707 if you are still looking.

Look forward to hearing from you....

Liz x

ps if anyone else who posted replies needs piano teacher, you know where I am now :-)
