I am looking at the Dell Outlook site ( dimension 5150 or 9150). I am green on these things but have a spec I am looking for. Anyway I know that the Dell Outlook computers do not have a monitor but thats fine as I will buy one. But what I notice is that none of the systems have soundcards and I wanted to ask a really stupid question - what do I need one for?
My husband will use the system to record CD's/DVDs and I want to use it to plug in a microphone and record my own CD's for work (voice work) so do I need a sound card for that?
The approx general spec I'm after is:
3 GB processor
1 GB memory
200 GB Hard Drive (husband keeps loads of music on computer)
CD/DVD dual drive
keyboard etc
So soundcard or not ? and is there any other good offers out there apart from Dell? We have an Evesham now and love it but Dell is much cheaper than Evesham and Evesham will not negotiate in any way on price os now need to look for a cheaper option.
Cheers

Systems may not have soundcards, but the 5150 and 9150 should have built-in (onboard) sound, which is perfectly acceptable for listening and recording music.
CD/DVD dual will not be good enough to be honest, if he keeps a lot of music on there, the hard disk *will* fail eventually and you need to regularly back things up. A DVD-writer is essential to me. These can be bought separately though.0 -
I personally would go with Evesham...
But a soundcard or at least onboard sound will allow you to listen to music play CDs
etc etc without it you wont hear anything from the PC..
And you need one to record Voice so a socket is needed to plug a Microphone in.
You can get them for about £20 and are really easy to install, or ask Dell Outlet to bung one in.. at a reasonable price.

Hi
Why do you think that Dell computers don't have a monitor? its only the base units that don't, you'll find it cheaper to buy one with a monitor, rather than buy one seperate, as they are usually the better deals. When you order onsite (if your going to), and the model that you have picked does not have a soundcard, you will be giving the option of selecting one, as a cheap upgrade. If your going to listen to music/play cds, you really need one.
At the moment they have some goods deals on, and remember if you don't want the 3yr warranty, just change to 12mths collect and return and it will save you over £100+
Hope this hel0 -
Thanks team! I "thought" that they didnt come with a monitor from the outlet option and was going to get them to add one and I will now get a sound card as well and thanks for the advice re a DVD writer as well - all you guys are great! I love this site0
