Phone lines and broadband

Hi all,
I know most companies say that you need a BT line to get their broadband, but can you just have the line or does that line need to be paid for (i.e. you need to pay your line rental to BT as well as broadband costs) or is it just the physical line you need?
Don't think I worded that too well so hope you all know what I mean!

Yes. You need a BT line which you are currently renting from BT. You pay BT your line rental and your ISP for your broadband.0

Ok, thanks!

Though with WLR, you could have a BT line but paying the line rental to OneTel or TalkTalk and having broadband with someone else, however the consensus is if you have a landline it is best to be billed by BT for line rental.
As you are in the Midlands, I'd seriously consider cable for broadband and it doesn't require a phone line, I have Telewest broadband and dropped my BT landline and don't have cable landline, now use VoIP through an adaptor so I can use my normal phones. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
There is an alternative approach which I now use:
I have taken broadband from Nildram.net and pay my line rental to BT.
The cheapest Nildram package is around £15.00/month, but elsewhere on the site they offer a FREE phone package of 500 mins/month to landlines in the UK if you have a broadband contract.
For me the second part pays for the first - could not believe it at first
.
As an aside, I have just put in an Orchid dialler to hand other aspects of my phone use - I am now a convert!0 -
hi people, welcome to my first post!!
whats best way to get broadband if you have a telewest line and not a b.t. one as most state as a minimum requirement.
PHEW, posting on here werent to difficult was it!?!0 -
To get ADSL broadband you need a BT line (whether you actually pay BT, TalkTalk or OneTel doesn't matter).
So with a Telewest phoneline you aren't going to get ADSL broadband.
You can however get the excellent Telewest Blueyonder broadband, which doesn't require a phoneline as it is delivered differently. (Though you will be tied in for 12 months).
For the last few years Telewest's phone service has been very poor value for money, which is why I used to have BT landline, but have dropped the landline altogether and use a VoIP adaptor to make and receive calls over my blueyonder broadband service for free. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
