Where to buy warranty for Plasma?

Options
I'm planning on buying a Plasma TV. As it is over £2000 I would like to get a warranty after the manufacturers one expires. I know about John Lewis but they don't have the model I want and I DON'T intend to buy it from the likes of Comet or Currys. So can anyone recommend an independent warranty company who will cover the tv? Thankyou!

I bought a Pioneer Plasma in October 2004 for £3000. I looked into the extended warranty but did and still do not feel they are of much value. The cheapest at the time for my Pioneer was between £500 and £700 for 3 and 5 years.

What I decided was that the manufacturer warranty covers faults for the 1st year, the home contents covers accidental damage or theft, after one year, my plasma will be worth approx 1/3rd less so £2000 maximum, (I was close, I can now find the 43mxe1 for around £1800), so I thought I would save my £500/£700 and fingers crossed my Pio will live for (at least) between 3 and 5 years, after which I will be looking to purchase a newer panel (putting my £500/£700 towards it) and if my Pio is still in good working order, this will be moved to our other sitting room.

I know this does not answer you question about a cheap extended warranty, but my personal opinion on extended warranties are they are overpriced and useless.

I would be interested though in hearing other peoples experiences with extended warranties.

Forgot to mention also....with some Visa's, if you buy electrical items with your Visa and then register it within so many days, they add an additional years warranty onto the the manufacturers. Obviously you would not want to leave this amount on your Visa, but if you were paying cash, using your visa then paying of the balance would give you the extra 1 year warranty for free.

I looked into this, but ended up getting my plasma on 12 months interest free.
  • Try Norwich Union. For a fixed monthly fee (about £15 I think?) they extend the warrantee on all your electricals - everything fromt he telly to the washing machine. You'd have to double-check that the cover plasmas though! Cat

Don't bother with extended warranties, Sale of Goods Act covers this type of
"problem" for up to 6 years, if something goes wrong after the 1st year contact the supplier quoting the Sale of Goods Act and they will sort it, even if it means taking it through the small claims court, a manufacturers or extended warranty only adds to your legal rights and cannot take them away.

Thanks for all of your help so far. I am aware of the legal position regarding the Sale of Goods Act, and the 6 year limit relates to the period within which you can make a civil claim. It may not be reasonable to make a claim for breach of contract after a year when you would be deemed to have had reasonable use of the goods. Hence why I would like an additional warranty.

I was interested in the Norwich Union info but can't see any mention of this on their site?
