Cancelling Amex charge card

I've been a member since 89 and recently decided that I can no longer justify the membersip fee of a Gold card so rang up today to cancel my membership. They offered me a green card free for 12 months but then she told me that they would charge £23 a year if I wanted membership points! "No point in keep my membership then", I said, "Just cancel my membership completely".
"Oh i'll try to get you free points as well", she said. "OK", I said.
So free membership and points for a year. Better than a kick in the doo-da's.
