Savings vehicle overview?

Soz if I'm being blind, but is there a general overview of the various savings vehicles available, and their relative risk/return?
Was planning to overpay my mortgage but wondering if it is possible to invest the money for a greater return instead (>4.89% net). Some hope I guess, but thought I'd at least check it out.
I've only ever used cash ISA's before and shied away from shares as I guess I'm fairly risk averse, so I know nothing about shares, bonds or anything else and would like to read up on them a bit.
Cheers.
