cleaning an EGR valve

Hi
I have a 51 daewoo matiz, engine management light came on so popped into garage to see what was wrong, apparantly its the EGR valve. Main dealer has quoted £180 inc vat for new unit & gasket. Can this unit be cleaned at home rather than a new one put in? anyone have experience of this? Its just cost me £40 for them to tell me what the fault is! The garage did say if I got a unit from somewhere else (net) they would charge me £40 to fit it, does this sound reasonable?

£40 to fit means about one hour would have it done, i havent looked under the bonnet of a matiz,im guessing there might not be too much space under there? it may be a job easier done on a ramp.
cleaning it may help it, you might get a few more miles out of it. but if its actually broken rather than just blocked then cleaning will make no difference. if you can do it diy then its worth a shot....work permit granted!0 -

If you have easy access to your exhaust manifold, then I'd be tempted to try and remove the EGR valve and give it a clean. Petrol should soften all the crud in there, and gentle brushing with a small wire brush should help remove soot deposits. If its really caked up, its probably worth just getting a new one as its quite a time consuming process.0 -
I cleaned out the EGR on my Mondeo. Scrape out the gunk with a stick. Using a combination of rags and paper towels, use an aerosol tin of brake cleaner fluid on what's left and wipe it out with rags etc.
Only downside is that usually the inlet manifold is gunked up too.Conor

just had the egr valve off my matiz, it took about 10 minutes to remove clean and re fit0

on a petrol model i would be more inclined to say the valve is knackered rather than gummed up but cleaning got to be worth trying.normally only the diesels that gum up and stick.
as for cleaning last one i did was saab/gm 2.2tid that was full of crap as were swirl flaps used some petrol and a stiff brush came up like new.0
