going over your card limit

in Credit cards
has anyone noticed that if you go over your limit without knowing, then the card is still accepted for awhile. Then when you get your next statement the details about you going over your the limit are not very obvious.
I am with Tesco, I hadnt realised i had gone over, it wasnt due to not being able to pay & they managed to allow my to spend over £100 before stopping that card. When I phoned up about this they are now actually telling me to pay twice as much as my summary tells me to.
Does anyone think this is ok? the man on the helpline just got snippy & said it my responsibility. In fairly small print it says phone up about this & then when you phone up they tell you to pay off a totally different amount from the statement.
Any suggestions about what to do or do we have to bow to the great credit cards in the sky?

I might be wrong, but I think that places such as petrol forecourts would not accept credit cards as payments if there was a risk of the card being declined after the petrol was already in the tank.0

Of course it is!.........said it my responsibility.
CC (unlike some debit cards) do have a floor limit. Only when the transaction exceeds this limit, a sanction is required.
The bank has put trust in you, by giving you the card in the first place.
.
Get a calculator, a pen and a note book. Or do not operate so close to your limit.Any suggestions about what to do......0 -
It may appear snippy but it is true. It is the account holders responsibility to ensure they know how much money they have to spend and to make payments on time etc. If you are close to your limit then you need to be really careful as you will be extending yourself financially.0

Of course it is. Your T&C's will state that, when asked, you will be required to immediately bring the account to order by paying off any overlimit amount. When I phoned up about this they are now actually telling me to pay twice as much as my summary tells me to.
Does anyone think this is ok?
This is totally separate to making the minimum payment. Indeed, if you ONLY paid the overlimit amount you'd immediately be overlimit again once they'd applied the interest/charges.0 -
Do you have internet access with this credit card? I find it really easy to keep track of my cards by using internet banking. I always try and keep a mental note of what I am spending and then double check against the internet.
I do agree that it is your responsibility to stay within your limit - not sure that Tesco have really done anything wrong here.0 -

Using "declined" as a guide to your card being full is never ideal. Use internet banking or a piece of paper to see if you have money available, not spend spend spend until it gets declined!Does anyone think this is ok? the man on the helpline just got snippy & said it my responsibility. More than reasonable - all they are asking you to do is get the account back within the credit limit - this will be over the minimum payment, but why would you expect them to let you stay over limit? If you do so, you will just incur charges each month.0
