Is he entitled to attendance allowance

My father was diagnosed with Altzhiemers in August, moved into a nursing home November (self funded) and is also terminally ill, a friend said he may be entitled to an attendance allowance, anyone know if it is feasable, or if there might be anything else he is entitled to, how would I go about claiming, I have no idea how the system works. He receives only his state pension, but does have savings and his own home.

Your help would be much appreciated at this very difficult time for me and my family.

As your father is self funding he is entiltled to make the claim.

you have stated he is terminally ill - you will need to get a DS 1500 form from GP/ consultant as this will fastrack the claim and he will be awarded the high rate of Attendance Allowance - ( off the top of my head i tink is £60-60).

It is worth looking at pension credit to when the AA is awarded.

  • Age makes a difference to which types of benefit that can be claimed.
  • My Dad willbe 80 at the beginning of March.

If your father is over 65 he would have to apply for AA.

Also if you get the DS1500 form and claim under the special rules, he does not have to know that the claim is being made, which if he does not know he is terminally ill may be wise.

Edit - must have posted at the same time!

Pension credit is like income support but it is for people over the age of 60.

They will want o know about savings and any retiremnet pensions that your father has.

The PC allowance is more generous than for income support and when AA is awarded, they should also include a disability premium.

  • My Dad does not know of his condition and wouldnt remember anyway because of the altzhiemers, reading the dwp website, doesn't he have to be diagnosed as only having less than 6 months left to live to be entitled to fasttrack?
