What price for a plumber?

Just bought my first place.
Toilet problem - it flushes fine, but then at the rate the cistern refills I'll only be going to the loo once a day.
The ball looks fine, hoping it's just a problem with the valve or pipe or that.
I have a friend who said he may have some parts and is going to take a look.
Failing that though, anyone got a rough idea what a plumber will charge to fix it? I understand how the loo all works (my DIY book almost convinced me I could replace bits myself!) so should be able to be confident enough not to be taken for a ride. But never called a plumber before in my life. Would obviously get a few estimates anyway, but anyone got any recent experience?

try finding a plumber in the first place might be your first hurdle..Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
Are thinking of you today.0 -
To find a plumber look on https://www.findacraftsman.com
This is the website of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, an organisation that vets its members.
Phone two or three and ask their hourly rate and minimum call out charge. If you feel that they do not do a good honest job or that you have been overcharged you can complain to the Guild and they will investigate the matter. Basically it is a way to be sure of dealing with someone who cares about their job and reputation, as members have to pay to join and also provide references. If they act dishonestly or don't rectify problems then they will be suspended or barred.
Hope this helps.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

Thanks guys.
A friend of mine is renovating a house and has given me the number of one - probably wouldn't do a job this small but can hopefully recommend someone else.
I was just wondering if anyone had an ball park figures (£50? £500? £5000?) as I have no clue. I do have an emergency fund (knowing the joys home owning would bring), but to be honest if it's just too expensive at the mo I'll just keep throwing jugs of water into the cistern after each flush!!0 -
Ask for a quote including how long it will take and price of parts. Pay no more than £60/ hour for call out or around £40 normal. A cistern will normally cost less than £10 and should take about 10- 15 minutes to fit (all being well). It is also easy to fit yourself- have a look in a DIY Plumbing book or on google "how to diy toilet plumbing" etc.

Rates will vary depending on where you are in the country.
Its a supply and demand thing.
Try to get a recommendation of a friend if at all possible.0
