Alba dvd player & recorder not compatible?

I recently bought an Alba dvd player (dvd74) and Alba+rw dvd recorder (1002).

When I try and play a dvd on either the dvd player or recorder (either a shop bought dvd or a copy from a friend) it works fine on both.

However, when I record anything on my dvd recorder, there is a problem when I try and play it back on my dvd player - everything seems fine for the first 10 mins, and then the picture starts jumping, and this gets progressively worse throughout the rest of the dvd.

However, the recorded dvd (that doesn't work on the dvd player) works perfectly if I play it back on the dvd recorder.

I've tried different discs (both +rw and +r), and recorded from the tv, video and another dvd, and the problem is always the same. I always finalise the +r discs as well, so this isn't an issue.

Does anyone know if this is due to a problem with the player, or the recorder? Or are they simply not compatible with each other? Is this my own fault for buying budget dvd player and recorders!

They are both under guarantee, but I don't know which one (if any) is causing the fault.
