Belkin 802.11g Wireless Range Extender/access Point - F5d7130

I purchased this some time ago when I was having problems with my wireless signal from one end to the other of our bungalow. I solved it temporarily by putting the router in the middle  .

However, now got sorted and the router is back at the back, and lounge is at the front, I do have a signal but it is weak.

Trying to look to get this working, I think it is probably now too old and does not have the necessary security, though I could have read wrong.

My router is now the Netgear DG834PN and I am using the WPA security, as instruction by you guys.

Could you please advise if it is "obsolete" and if not how to set it up.

Many thanks
DG

I have had a similar problem and was advised by posters on here to change the channel.

I did this and my reception improved. The cause was suggested that a neighbour was using the same channel as me. Might be worth a try.

You usually can get into the admin through 192.168.2.1 admin browser. It would be worth you ensuring that you have set an admin password if you haven't already as it could be someone else may be trying to get in.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

You may find that there are other wireless networks in range useing the same channel it can affect the signal. I found my belkin 54g was fine when I got it but as more wireless networks poped up round here the signal dropped. I changed the channel and it improved but I then went and upgraded it with an N class router and I get 100% signal where ever I go now.

Use somthing like net stumbler to find out the details of the wireless networks in your area.

these belkin things are a piece of crap IMO.. i have one sitting in my garage gathering dust doing nothing.... if you want to use it as an AP, you have to hard wire it into your current network afaik...

Well I "stumbled" at the first hurdle, it could not find a network adaptor on either my desktop or my laptop:o .

I'm not quite sure where your problem is here? if you want to connect a wireless network to a wired network then it needs to be connected via a cable at some point.

The early access points were just that they allowed you to add wireless to your network with a single LAN port. The adding the access point hardware to a router and produceing wireless routers makes things easier but they still only have 4 network ports if you want more connected via cables then you connect the router to a switch/hub.

Net stumbler not finding the addaptor then I'm not sure, it has worked for me with no problems on any of the addaptors I have had in my laptops

I take it you can you plug your PC directly into the router with an ethernet cable?

Is the router SSID being broadcast? - or if you opted for no SSID broadcast then have you entered the correct SSID for the PC to search for?

The Desktop is wired into the router, and the laptop is wireless.

    SSID is being broadcast.

It seems netstumbler only works with certain adaptors, unless I read it wrong.
