What should I use for a brand new External oak veneer door

My wife and I are going to buy this http://www.doorwarehouse.co.uk/showdoor2.php?args=ESVVMA0T02~(A0)~(E|B)~(.)~(026)~(M)~(.)~(.) and we want some advice about how to treat it please ie what are the best products to use at a reasonable price. We have heard that if not treated well the veneer could pop?

Any help greatly received. :T

Have a look at the small print on the website (considering buying a new front door from them myself so be interested to hear how you get on).

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! (Door finishing instructions to validate product guarantee)
At Kershaws Doors Ltd we take great care in sourcing the best quality products currently available. To ensure you obtain continued satisfaction, please follow these few simple instructions, as it is vital your door is finished correctly.
    • Every door must be sealed immediately after unpacking – prior to being hung.
    • For EXTERNAL doors, only oil based varnish/paint which is “Microporous” (Breathable) is acceptable. We recommend a minimum of 5 coats of Sikkens/Sadolin to the front, back, sides, and especially to the top and bottom of the door. We cannot guarantee external oak doors doors if fitted in a location exposed to the elements, a rain canopy of 1000mm x 600mm deep minimum dimensions must be fitted above these doors.
    • Any planed edges, cut outs for hinges, locks, letter plates, handles etc. must be additionally sealed during the hanging procedure, so no moisture ingress whatsoever can occur.
It goes on to say to contact them if you have any questions..
    Hope that helps

  • Thanks for the heads up, I have since found the door £100 cheaper at Wickes! Although I might opt for a solid oak door instead of veneer. I will let you know how it goes.
  • Jason, we just had a solid oak front door fitted. I haven't put anything on it yet, but ordered 'Varnol' after doing some research. I have a decorator coming next week, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Van1971...you mentioned your front door cost £250 to fit over 2 days in my previous post on wooden front doors. Could i ask how much you paid for door, frame and all the ironmongery (hinges, locks, letterbox and so on) and where you got them? Didn't price it out totally but it seemed like it would come to quite a bit when i was looking at door warehouse and their sister company handle warehouse.

Wickes look cheaper like Jason has found (especially as i'm in door warehouses most expensive delivery area - £55 for door and frame) but whether the quality is as good i'm not sure. Most of the comments on the wickes doors/frames on their website seem pretty good though.

Hi Jason, well done for getting the door cheaper.:T

The reply Andrew-b posted is very helpful for you, and with regards to 'Sikkens', I have used it on numerous occasions, and its fantastic stuff, its 'Dutch', and speacially made of the elements, and we do get the elelments lol.

When you seal the wood, make dure every edge is covered, and inside the letter box opening.

If you are going to varnish it yourself, get back to me, and I will give you some tips for a perfect finish.:D
  • andrew ~ you are right it all adds up and we did spend more than I would have liked, but we are in out forever house so we wanted to do things properly. I got my oak door & frame from here http://www.best4doors.co.uk/ it was about £400. I bought black ironmongery on another website (can't find the link) and asked my carpenter to work his magic. It looks beautiful!
