from france TO a home phone, cheapest ?

I want to call an elderly relative daily whilst we are away in France. Calls would last a couple of minutes in the early evening. What experiences have you had and Any recommendations?

  • Try Telesoldes or Telerabais, sister companies to 1899 and Telediscount. Or Appeldiscount.

You could use the companies pricefighter mentions, or calling cards, or callback. The choice probably depends most on the terms for outgoing calls on the line - like whether you will be in hotels or staying with friends.
  • Looking for a good way to call/be called between Switzerland and UK. Have come across call2.com also but can anyone recommend them or any other providers? Thanks in advance for any suggestions

That firm charges a ridiculously high 4p/minute to call a Swiss landline from the UK.

There are numerous much cheaper ways to make such calls (see the MSE International Callchecker). The cheapest at the moment appears to be ½p/minute. Remember, the prices quoted thereon are from a BT residential landline.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

From UK, see the Callchecker as Heinz suggests

From Switzerland, it depends a bit on your situation there. If you are staying with friends you could use similar cheap calls providers - the Finarea ones are listed on http://www.myvoipprovider.com/blogcategory/Betamax/9/9/

Otherwise, calling cards or callback services. Calling cards via 0800 numbers usually have higher tariffs. I haven't used Call2 myself; I'd also suggest Mywebcalls and Voipfone (.co.uk) at about half the Call2 tariff

If you also have a mobile, see these threads, as if you will make fairly long calls home to family, the Swisscom SIM's cheap tariff for up to an hour could be good value with a calling card, or other ideas there

    also, Sim details at http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/switzerland.html

I recall finding a simple prefix system for France to UK calls, no signup and around 3p/min. Similar to our 0844 numbers from the UK. Now I need it again - can't find it! Anyone?
