USB and Win95

I have an old pc and was wondering if I can fit USB to it. All the USM things I see are for w98 and above. Is that because they assume w95 is not used or because it is not compatible?

I am assuming that the old box has a pci slot

Windows 95 Release 2.1 (or greater) or Windows 95 with OSR 2.1 supports USB, but many product manufacturers don't provide USB drivers for it as it's a bit flaky.

The majority of software companies don't provide drivers for anything below Windows 98 SE (2nd Edition).

It might be easier for you to upgrade your PC, you will be very lucky to get USB going on Win 95.

Even with OSR 2.1 Microsoft didn't include STIMON so you can't use USB scanners.

Even Windows 98SE can be a bit flaky with USB.

It sounds like a good time to upgrade.

Just to echo what everyone else has said "any version of 95 is pant's with USB" it's as simple as that. So long as you have all of your drivers & software for your computer the best bet is to purchase 98se which should run on your hardware and will give you full USB support.

Operating systems such as Windows ME, Win 2000 and the all new singing and dancing versions of XP are innapropriate as your hardware will not be able to run them.

You should be able to source a second user copy of 98se for about £20.00, when you make your purchase check that it is an original disc containing the full version. You will also need it to come with the user manual which has the licence attatched. You will most probably find copies for sale in local advertising papers etc.

If you are not comfortable installing it yourself a local computer engineer / shop will have technicians whom will charge approxiamately £30.00 to carry out the install.

    Hope this helps.
