Tesco Saver opening Direct Debit

My mum opened a Tesco saver account and has received an application form in the post but is a bit confused by the direct debit form (and I am too). She doesn't want to make regular payments just ones now and again - the form seems to imply you have to do this by DD - but what she would rather do is a normal BACS transfer from another account. It is a bit ambiguous so she is not sure whether to fill it in this bit.
Also would it cause confusion if she sent an opening cheque for considerably more than she initially said on the application?
If anyone has any knowledge it would be appreciated.
EDIT: Actually I just found the answer to my first question scrolling back a few pages - sorry for repeating stuff ..

Your mother will need to keep the 'considerable' funds in her current account, making presumably very little interest, whilst she waits for TPF to process the opening cheque deposit.
Better to send £1, or some other nominal amount, keep the rest in a savings account (perhaps linked to the current account), and then transfer it in by BACS/FP once the Tesco account is up and running (which could be some considerable time according to the information on their website).0
