    ≥ means greater than or equal to, and ≤ means less than or equal to.

    so if y is greater than or equal to -5 AND y is less than or equal to -5, then y = -5.

    That's assuming that:

    y ≥ -5
    y ≤ -5

    are two rules that are obeyed at once.

    However, if the symbols don't have lines under them, i.e. the two conditions are:

    y > -5
    y < -5

    Then you have a trick question, and there is no answer that fits the conditions.

    It's not got a _ under the < or >

    It's 2 separate sums and they go like this:

    In this question you must choose y only from the numbers, !!-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

    y > 2
    Y< 1
    Y> -1
    y > -5
    y < -5

    There's a couple of same as or < > but I can't type them

    My if I can only choose from that range, then surely y can't be both more than and less than -5 or am I STILL being daft?:o :o This is not doing my self esteem any good. Why did I stop boozing again?

    Don't you just pick which numbers from the list obey that property? So for y is bigger than -5 that's all of them except -5, and for less than it's none.

  • Do you know what juno? I never thought of NONE being an answer. I was just so caught up in the two questions being contradictory.

    Yep samhale for each one it's the value of "y" so they're all different. Am I THAT stupid do you think?

    Y< 1 y = 0
    Y> -1 y = 1
    y > -5 y = -3
    y < -5 - can';t be any.

  • So, rather than choose ALL answers less or more than the number I (DS) just choose the nearest number? What was I doing in class all those years ago? Hands over ears I reckon. If this is me at P7, imagine my :o when he gets to high school. And there's me getting all dramatic about glottal stops and apostrophes:rotfl:

    My DD who did maths GCSE this year, looked at this question and commented that trick questions are the norm, as are questions with more than one answer and errors in the textbooks:eek:.
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
