£250 gas bill for two months!

Just got my gas bill. 582 metric units over 63 days at a cost of £250! 3 bed modern detached. Feels high to me what do you think? I think a lot of it may be to do with the fact that we have a control unit that will only turn on the heating and the hot water at the same time. We cannot turn the heating on independant of the water but can turn the water on independant of the heating.

Looks all right to me. About 100kwh a day - it has been cold, this month, after all.

The Central Heating system you have is quite common, particularly on older installations.

I don't think that the HW coming on with CH is the cause of your problem.

A well insulated tank will 'lose' 2kWh to 3 kWh a day if full of hot water. So the 'loss' would be no more than 200kWh from the 6,500kWh you have used.

In practice even if timed there would be some loss from the HW tank.

The other important point is that the Heat is not 'lost' as it warms up the fabric of your house - it is, in effect, another tiny radiator.

Are you sure that the bill is based on actual meter readings and not estimated - either the 'start' reading or the 'end' reading?
  • Agreed, Magentasue. We've been vigilant (VERY vigilant!) and used almost £200-worth over the last 2 months. That's in a 4 bed extended semi with 5 occupants and with at least one person in during the day.

Edit: There may be *slightly* lower gas tariffs on the market than the one you are currently on, btw. Worth checking...

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • I'd be happy with that if I was you. I live in a 1 bedroom flat and mine was 147 for just under 2 months of which I was away bout 3 weeks. So be happy.
