Buying a place in Manchester

Hello
The gf and I are now looking for a home....we are neither from the Manchester area but she works in Salford and me in Leeds and for her sake we decided to move into a place in Manchester 6 months ago so that she could get into work easily rather commute.
So we like so much that we have decided to buy somewhere in the Gt Manchester area....But given where I work we would need somewhere close to the M62 for commuting purposes
We do not know the areas that well so any Mancunians in here could advise on nice areas to push us in the right direction would be really helpful??

It will depend which way you are commuting on the M62 - towards Leeds or towards Liverpool? - does your GF work in City centre and do you want a nice area of a cheap area (or somewhere in between?)
(Im front Bolton by the way and work in Manchester so I should be able to give you some prime spots!)0 -
Thats going to be a crappy commute for you, the M62 is murder at the best of times and if you get the train you will spend your commute doing your best impression of a sardine.0

Just read your post properly!! Prestwich, Bury is very popular and a nice area as are parts of Whitefield. Swinton in Salford isnt to bad (would require a quick trip on the M60 to reach the M62 but there is motorway access to and from M60 in M62 direction in Swinton) and Clifton also in Salford (close to Swinton) is also quite nice.
A little further afield, Littleborough and Hollingworth in Rochdale are also nice and have a very scenic lake (although I can imagine the prices match the location!)0 -

I am heading towards Leeds (M62 East bound) and yes she works just outside city centre.0 -

Yep tell me about it....I go by car usually and leave at 5.30am to avoid M62 car park that starts around 7am or so.....journey back isnt too bad depending on whether or not a truck has caught on fire going 'up the hill' !!!

Looking for a very nice area to be honest and we have £300K max to play with0 -
On that side of Manchester, Prestwich is nice, we looked at houses round there, and you get a fair size house for your money.
You might find it a bit grim looking round Manchester at first. When my OH moved from Yorkshire to Manchester he found it depressing. We now live in South Manchester (Didsbury) which is a nice suburb, but on the wrong side for your commutes. But manchester is OK really!
If you are happy to be a bit further out, then I'd take a drive around some of the areas that people have mentioned already e.g. Littleworth and surrounds.0 -
Whitefield works because it is on the M62 and the metro line into the city centre. If you can face a 10 minute further drive and like new build estates, try Outwood, Radcliffe.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
