Can they do this???

My husband has just called the insurance company up for the car to find out where or renewal pack has got to.
When he called they stated an address we lived at nearly a year ago???
He called them in the summer to change the policy to put my name on as well as change the address...the insurance comapny say he''s never notified them of the move BUT have me as a named driver on the policy list??

HOWEVER apparently from today we are in an undisarable area and the insurance company won't insure us...making the insurance void.
They have quoted him £1500 for the year third party only AND said that if he wants to leave the brooker he has to pay £200 even though they could not insure him????

They say they MAY waviar the fee if they find evidence of my hubby changing the address BUT he will lose his three years no claims as he has not kept his side of the bargain so to speak???

Im confused and extremly angry...any ideas?

cant see why you would have to pay £200, if your not insured why would they assume you would stay with the broker? call your underwriter direct you may be surprised with the result i've left many brokers and never paid anything, i'd ask them to explain this in writing
  • I could be mistaken here but if the insurance company managed to get you added on to the policy but not changed the address which is obviously their admin error, no fault of yours - doesn't that mean your insurance was invalid anyway because the vehicle wasn't insured at the correct address? That would be worth checking because that was in a way making you break the law against your will!!!???

We had a problem like this but with car tax. We have a car on a personal lease from Lombard & although they took our change of address, the tax was sent to our previous 4 months after we moved & informed them, so we drove around for nearly a month without valid tax but it was their fault. (they tax the car, we don't).
  • Your broker cannot charge you a fee for not renewing the policy!! Also your husband will not use his 3years no claims bonus, as this is issued by the insurer not the broker. The fact that they have the wrong details is the brokers fault for not processing any changes.

Ring your broker and ask them to send you your no claims bonus certificate or proof of no claims.. They have to send you this by law. Your policy is due for renewal so they have to send you this.. If they say no, i would ask to speak with the manager.. If they did not change their response, i would mention reporting them to the insurance company and also to the FSA who regulate insurance..

It is brokers like this that give the market a bad reputation..
