Turning paper copy into a word format?

I wonder if this is possible to do

I have a tonne of papers that I wish to turn into electronic copies so I can cut and paste certain things.

However I do not have electronic copies of the documents - is it possible to scan (or other) these documents so that I have them in an electronic format such as word?

If the material is typed/ printed then most scanners and printer/scanners will come with bundled OCR software - typically something like ABBYY Finereader or ScanSoft Omnipage.

I've used the latter (Omnipage SE 4) more than the former, as it comes with some (all?) Canon scanners. It worked very well every time I used it - distinguishing between text and logos, for example, and only attempting to convert the text parts.

If you have MS Word, Omnipage even adds an extra couple of items to the File menu so that you can Acquire Text from the scanner without leaving Word.
