british gas introduce cancellation fee
I seem to spend my life chasing BG tariffs, they never seem to reduce the tariff I am on , always launching a new tariff hoping I don't notice and keep paying the old rate, click energy went from 1 through to 6 ; now we have websaver 1 but the catch is when they inevitably launch websaver 2 there is a £30 cancellation fee if you need to switch.

You've hit the nail on the head. It's alright these Bg huggers forever recommending the new-fangled, just launched BG internet tariff but they never issue a financial health warning with them, i.e. you need to keep on top of them or you will very quickly end up paying more in some cases than other company's standard tariffs. Loyalty is not something that pays when it comes to BG, I'm afraid. OFGEM have promised to look into this endless superceding of internet tariffs but I don't hold out much hope of them actually doing anything worthwhile. If I rang them to report a huge hole in BGs car park they would probably say they would look into that as well...Call me Carmine....

"Cancellation fee of £30 per fuel if you move to another tariff on or before 30th September 2009". So for those on dual fuel this would, of course, by £60.
As I expect BG will hold prices, despite the cut in wholesale prices, until the Spring - I'm sticking with Click 6 Dual and no cancellation fee.0 -

For many people Click 6 Dual is cheaper than Websaver 1 as well.0 -

Out of interest - what do you expect OFGEM to do? The way they seem to be going re cost reflectivity its likely they will push to increase their relative price.0 -

I expect OFGEM to outlaw the wholly discredited business practice of superceding their internet tariffs every few months in order to get to the top of the switching sites. Click Energy 1 was launched in 2006 and by 2008 we were onto Click 6! Check out the tariff rates on BGs site to realise that the people remaining on Click 1 (BG don't tell their customers their tariff has been superceded) are paying way more than people on Click 6. It's not rocket science. Unless it's financially in BGs interests to do it, why do it at all?Of course, I was once naive enough to believe OFGEM existed to protect the interests of the consumer. I feel so stupid (in hindsight).

Perhaps Ofgem should concentrate on banning excessive switching handshakes. Allowing switchers to steal £60 to £85 from passive customers every two months is obscene. At least British Gas have (presently) withdrawn from this market.0

You cannot blame people switching as they are within their rights just as you cannot blame utility companies trying to maximise profits for their share holders and management its the same game.
What I blame is a weak government not taking responsibilty and legislate to stop both practises Ofgem are I think too weak as well to do much they have no teeth. I think the government would use them as a shield if things get to rough and thats all.Look after the pennies and the pounds will spend themselves0 -
Websaver1 is certainly more expensive on the cancellation fees, i.e. it actually has them  If the Websaver tariff is going to be administered like the click tariffs and superceded every 5 minutes, I'm assuming there will be no cancellation fees to pay when a customer (miraculously) discovers the existance of Websaver2 (it won't be long coming, believe me) and asks to be transferred to it?Call me Carmine....
