Free Safety Phone for your child

The safety of your kids seems to be big these days, with statistics of one in four children under 10 in the UK have a mobile phone! Not like it used to be in my day. Anyway, you can get a free ‘Teddy Fone’ for your child. It’s a mobile phone designed to be very secure for the child.
They seem to expect you to keep it for two years (a 24 month contract), however you don’t have to pay for the phone or a monthly rate. You only pay for phone calls made at ’standard rate’.
However the site doesn’t specify exactly what standard rate they are working along. Make sure you read over the terms & conditions before taking the plunge too.
Teddyfone can send and receive calls like a normal mobile phone. It is restricted to calling 4 numbers, and can automatically text 3 numbers in an emergency. Each number can be programmed on the phone by simply sending a text message.
Without a screen on the phone the child obviously can’t receive text messages. Check out the interactive image of the phone hardware.

I really think this is a bad idea on several levels.
I don't object to kids having mobile phones for genuine EMERGENCIES like if they get lost for example. But having them just so they can be checked up on breeds a dependency that is entirely unnecessary. (By dependency, I mean the child becomes dependent on both the phone and constant contact with the parent and the parent becomes dependent on the phone and constant contact with the child. Not healthy imo.)
They are not safe for young developing brains due to radiation levels. At the very least, they have not been proven to be safe and that is cause enough for concern.
They are marketing an adults' toy to children. And using parents' fear to sell it. Quote from the very first line of their home page: 'Child Safety is at the forefront of every parents mind...'
It is an additional and unnecessary expense. Far better to know where they are, make sure where that is is safe and give them an old phone that they can use if something unforseen happens. And I would expect it to be pay as you go with no unnecessary calls made.
Edit: and they didn't even use an apostrophe on 'parent's.' Okay rant over. Sorry, Boohbah.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
What nonsense - where are young children going to be that they need to be in contact via a phone?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards.
