After some unfortunate family news I've aquired a batch of old photographs which I want to scan and in order to save to disc.
I therefore need a scanner but don't have a clue which,
do i go for an all in one scanner/printer, there are some cheap deals,
a stand alone scanner, which are about the same price as all in one.
if it were possible i would like to be able to have a facility to scan negatives, and use software to change the scanned image to colour. can this be done?
any advice would be of good assistance. thanks

I like cannon, not cheapest but good quality.

thanks can all in one printers copy/scan negative though, ?
i think that's what i'd prefer.0 -
For good results you need a scanner with a light source above the negative (i.e. typically built into the lid). You won't quite get as good results as with a dedicated film scanner, but as you also want to scan photos, that's not really an option (unless you want both!).
As stated in the previous post, Canon are quite well regarded - the Canoscan 5600F is (I think) the cheapest with a separate light source for the film scanner.0 -
I went for a cannon 8600 for similar requirements, general scanning and scanning of negatives. One of the reasons was I know how tricking negative scanning is. I had an epson before that a mains surge blew up. The cannon has an infra-red scan mode. What is does is scan 1st with white light, then scan again with infra red. On infra red negatives are transparent so what shows up is the dust you missed. The software then fixes the dust by blending the surround pixels. It takes a long time as it scans each negative twice and you can load in 2 strips of 6. But the end result is better so I just watch the TV and come back when it has finished.0

Hi thanks people, my printer is old so will probably go for an all in one scanner/printer.
It looks as though I won't be able to scan negatives, however it's not essential as the majority of things are in photo print format. Negatives are definately in the minority.
I'd seen this on pc world,

does anyone know if it's good value in terms of print quality/ease of use/cost of cartridges. (bearing in mind I won't be printing a lot of photo's)0 -
Canon MP610 ??????????ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.0

Compatible inks are easier to obtain for epson than canon so you can cut costs that way. However, epson are reckoned to use a lot of ink. Having had epson for years and now swapped to canon I'd agree that epson always seemed to be cleaning the heads and using ink. My new canon is technically better in other ways too.0

i'll put another vote in for a canon too... higher the price, higher the spec, personally, i'd go with the Canon MX700, as you have a doc feeder (load loads of photos, and it'll feed them and scan them, rather than having to lift the lid each time!) - PCW Product Code 7894070

I love my Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner, I got this a few months ago for approx £150 with Adobe Photoshop elements. It's Fab - amazing resolution and very quick. Home or professional controls. Also comes with slide/negative tray.

I think it's worth buying a dedicated scanner and separate printer as quality will be better.
The epson R200 is a fab printer:

Guess it depends on how much money you want to spend also space and future use...0
