Is It Still Worth Using An Asda Card For Petrol Discount?

My partner and I use her Asda card for petrol purchases as this has until now given a 2p discount per litre - she doesn't use it for anything else.

She has now been notified that as from 1st March this discount will be halved to 1p/litre. Locally Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda usually have the same pump prices (Asda leads down sometimes but only briefly) so we are wondering if it is still worth using the Asda card, as opposed to getting the Nectar or Tesco points - has anyone done the sums?

Personally I use a Shell Citi Mastercard with a 3% rebate on shell fuel redeemable against future shell fuel purchases with the Shell Driver's club on top (although this is relatively minimal benefit)

In terms of Clubcard, assuming you buy petrol you get 0.829 points/pence per liter (at current prices) or 1.658 points/pence with the current double points promo or 6.632p per liter in Clubcard deals
  • Tesco are currently offering double Clubcard points on fuel (2%). Sainsburys offer 1 Nectar point per litre (0.5p off per litre).

So to compare the difference in cost you need to know the price of fuel. Assume all stores are charging 82.9p per litre, then Asda would effectively charge 81.9p, Sainsburys 82.4p and Tesco 81.242p.

But that is not a equal comparison as a loyalty card is not equivalent to a credit card. Because you can also use a cashback credit card at Tesco and Sainsburys. The cashback would depend on the card and might range from 0.25% to 5%!

To give a like-for-like comparisson, if I use my Tesco credit card at Tesco I would get another 1 point per £2 (0.5%) bringing the Tesco price down to an equivalent 80.8275p, if I use my Nectar credit card at Sainsburys I would get another 2 points per £1 (1%) bringing the Sainsburys price down to an equivelent 81.571p

Thanks for the helpful comparison info, just what I was too lazy to research!
We would get another 1.5% using Amex so it looks like it's back to Tesco! (Pity as I hate Tescos)
  • Don't forget tesco clubcard points can be worth 4p each, so at 80p a litre you get about 3.6p equivalent :)
