UK Ripoff "European cover"
Comments

I've just checked the co-op one, and it seems to be restricted to 90 days European cover. So looks like its just Saga for more than 90 days.0
-
I've just found another one - ecarinsurance.co.uk - haven't done a quote yet, but it claims to cover for up to 365 days in Europe as long as your main residence is UK0

Lloyds TSB / Churchill offer unrestricted use throughout EU for cars.Does anyone know which insurance companies in the UK would cover me to take my car abroad for more than 90 days at one time?
Thanks.

I think they are restricted to 90 days max too.0

Your right Dorsetlass, Churchill give a maximum of 90 days and the policy says they may charge for it, the Lloyds TSB policy gives 90 days europe cover for free. They also now have a comparsion site so if you go through that it would be whatever the particular company you chose cover.
Not sure on Carol Nash, it appears you get foreign use but cannot find polciy documents online so cannot confirm or deny.
P.S Saga do not like covering people who take the car abroad for more than 90 days at a time, it is covered but if they discover you are they often exclude it from your policy or ask you to insure elsewhere.0 -
I thought that was the whole point of the Saga one - easy cover for European travel for those over 50 who have more time to be abroad!0
-
Its not intended for people who keep a car semi permantently over in France etc or for long periods. The premium they charge for insurance does not reflect the risk of this so if they find out this is the case they ask you to arrange cover else where.
If its occassional foreign use over 90 days they don't mind.0 -
Last time I looked Britain was in europe, so why do our insurers get away with the idea of charging a premium for driving in other countries?
My colleagues in France and Germany just laugh when I mention it, as of course their insurance covers all europe. ( this of course invalidates the right/left hand drive argument)
"it makes me so angry!"

Every motor policy issued by an authorised insurer in the EU covers 'all of Europe' in the sense that it will provide either the statutory minimum level of cover required by the law of the country visited or the statutory minimum level of cover in the country in which the policy was issued (whichever is greater). This is as per the requirements of the EU Motor Insurance Directives.
Insurers only charge an additional premium for extending the cover provided abroad to the same level of cover provided in the UK.0 -

just wondering.... if i had TP Only cover here in the UK, and was going abroad - am i right saying that there's no point paying for european cover because it wouldn't be any more cover than i get for free anyway?
also, do you know why it's included for free? most people don't use it - wouldn't it be fairer to charge only those who want to use it and reduce the overall cost for everyone else?
interested to know the anserr to some of these questions if anyone kind enough to help:beer:  :beer:0 -
