Well, I suppose you could view it that way - but if you remember that nature abhors waste and that there's something out there to deal with every (natural) thing that needs clearing up, then you're just contributing to the food chain. I'm sure the birds won't care where the food came from - all they are interested in is making it through the winter. :D
:hello: I'm very well, considering the state I'm in. :hello:

I save all the fat in a pot, have another for crumbs etc mix the whole lot together when there's enough and put it in a mesh bag up in a tree, the birds love it!

I put in any waste food I come across

I don't save the chicken fat, I soak an old stale bit of bread in it and give it to the birds.but When my husband was alive, I used to save all the dripping from the meat, and he would eat it spread on thick slices of toast with lots of pepper and salt.
He also loved ordinary white cooking fat spread on thick cut slices of Hovis. His Gran used to give him that before the war, as she said it would stave off colds .As I was married to him for over 41 years, I never knew him to ever suffer with a cold so it must have worked. But I never fancied it myself.
His old Gran lived to 92, and died in her bed with all of her faculties, and all of her teeth. She used salt to clean them with . She was the old wife that all the tales were written about I think
My kids used to think she was a witch !! Bless her
  • my father does that now, he loves his beef dripping on fresh bread, apparantly as a child, Dad called me Lizzie dripping as i used to love it too !!! couldtn do it now !! just leave it for my roast potatoes.

i used to eat beef dripping on toast as a kid, but chicken fat doesnt sound very appetising i would give it to the birds
  • having just cooked a chicken tonight, the best thing to do with the drained away fat would be

    1. pot it up to add bread left overs for birds.
    2. keep in fridge for roasted veggies ? ?

thanks very much for this post, have always just thrown chicken fat away before. off to research on stock now !!

I love beef dripping from roast beef, hot on toast with a little bit of salt :T :j
Don't have it very often these days and probably full of cholesterol (spelling?)
I've used goose fat for roast potatoes, (and they are scrummy) so I don't see why you can't use other fat as well.
