Quick question about growing from shop bought potatoes...

  • As they are not treated for disease, I would grow them in a dustbin to see what happens - and if it goes wrong, then you have lost nothing and contaminated nothing. If you stick them in the ground on an allotment, then you are taking a bigger risk with contamination. A decent sized dustbin could hold 2-3 tubers, or you could put one tuber in a bucket each. Just treat them like normal growing potatoes (earth them up, keep them watered if we ever get any sun)

Get them chitted now, and see what happens. If it goes well, flog them back to the supermarket!
  • Thanks for the advice. I told my son that if he could find some for sale on the internet somewhere and they were a reasonable price I would price some seed potatoes so he got googling and we have ordered some. They can go in the ground and the ones we have from Aldi we will grow in containers or bags (I've read the growing potatoes in bags thread!). I don't think we would get much for them at the supermarket. I only paid 49p for 5kg.

Thanks again for the help. Its the first time we've grown potatoes and I'm sure I will be bag at some point for more advice!
  • Each year I find pototoes growing in borders from peel which we have dropped near the composter . I bet if I planted pototo peel where I wanted them to grow they would do no such thing. Bought ours from B & Q and they are sprouting nicely. Just need the snow to stop now so we can plant them.
  • I do mean potatoes of course.

During WWII that's exactly what people used to do. If you save a piece of skin with eyes in it you will get usually a crop. You'll get better results from a whole potato but it works.

I grew some from shop potato's last year and they didn't do much at all. The ones from seed potato's the previous year were much better imo and I'll be buying seed potato's again.

Even better, buy yourself a couple of the cheap grow-bags, shake all the compost down to one end, and stand it on the end against a wall, or freestanding if you can. Slice the top off, or even slice a few slits in the side, pop in a couple of sprouting potatoes (leave a couple of medium sized spuds from your pack on the windowledge for a couple of weeks to get them started)

Mid march is about the best time to get them outside.

I'm just joining the marfona fan club ;) though mine came from a butcher's, not Aldi. I am chitting the last few from my sack chitting on the windowsill at the moment, I bought seed potato to work with as well, but I was too tight fisted to pay the postage rates I have seen online for marfona!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have just found a couple of bags in my veg rack with sprouting spuds in there, shows how often I use it!

Some new potatoes and some maris piper, both lots have roots on them which are about 3 inches long!

They were near their sell by date when I bought them and I only noticed once I had opened the bags that there was the sign of an eye or two about to appear.

What is the best thing to do with them now, they are still in the green foodsaver bags that I got free from Lakeland (not that they seem to have done much) , I know I should take them out of the bags so that they don't go mouldy etc but what then?

Regarding planting, I have some of the large black buckets that you can get from Morrisons, the ones that they keep their flowers in, will they be big enough to put just one maris piper potato in and a couple of new potatoes?
