Yes another overlimit question

in Credit cards
Hi, ok I've just logged onto my Amazon credit card (with Halifax) to make a payment. My payment isn't due until the 31st. I've been charged an over limit fee, even though at no point in this month until that fee and interest were charged was I over my limit (1850). I missed a payment in November, and paid it in December. Could this be the cause of this over limit in some way?
More importantly, will I be within my rights to ask for that £12 refunded? As far as I'm aware an over limit fee is exactly that, and not once did I go over my limit in that statement.
EDIT: Ahh, perhaps it is my fault after all, operating so close to my limit - from their point of view, I should have calculated my balance after interest. Is that correct? Oh well, lesson learnt if so.
And another question, I've just checked my credit file (for the first time in a good long while) and a £100 credit limit is open under my name with Shop direct finance limited. I wasn't even in this country when that was opened. Is it not illegal to give someone a credit limit without their permission? There is no balance on it. A google tells me that it is part of Littlewoods, a mail order company who I've never ordered from but get pestered often by.
Thanks for any response

Rule of thumb, for every £500 credit available, leave £50 spare.
So a Visa with £2500 should not take this above £2250, this leaves plenty of fat for interest. On the other hand a 0% Card well max it out.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -
The interest and/or late payment fees they charged you took you over your limit?Kavanne

Yes you have exceeded your limit, Yes the interest payment has taken you over, yes you can ask for that to be refunded and depending on whether this is a regular occurence or not and how you ask (apologetically) you might well get it back as many people do.
They can only say no after all so for the sake of a phone call, ask them. Have you though about BT'ing this to another card with 0% ?0
