  • I am!! The financial-phobic has turned into a moneysaving geek!

Here Here!! I am the same!! My mum says she's never seen such a turn-around in someone who used to be so careless with money... never again I can assure you!!

This site is brilliant and makes you realise that there is light and the end of the tunnel!!

    Three Cheers for MSE!! :T :T :T
  • I wholeheartedly agree. Since getting my @rse in gear over the Xmas break, I feel in control AT LAST! and a whole burden has lifted...

Love meal planning/batch cooking - don't now need to stress about cooking different fresh meals (don't like junk/convenience food at all) after the daily slog at the office.

    Yay!

  • Justruth - very well put and I totally agree!

I love going through the month and not only knowing when money is going to come out of my account, but knowing how much money I have left for the month.

I also (whispers) have a bar chart, complete with multicoloured bars for each of my debts, which is totally geeky but the thrill of filling it out each month and watching the total reduce is more than equal to the 'excitement' I used to get from mindless spending...:o

My next challenge is to work on getting my 'fritter count' down by cutting down/out random spending.
  • I totally agree! I love paying off chunks of the credit card and seeing the debt go down; although sometimes I do get frustrated at how long it's taking - especially at the end of the month when I have no spare pennies to make extra little payments to the credit card!

Brilliant post justruth, sums up how I feel perfectly. Love the NSDs, the free scratchcards are just brilliant, and gift neutral is fun too! I'm in nowhere near as much debt as a lot of people on here are but it's great to have had my LBM when it's controllable - and it's teaching me some valuable life lessons for when I do eventually get a mortgage and start a family :)

What a great post - definately couldn't have put it better myself!

I love seeing the debts reduce and making positive decisons about what I spend. Now asking that 'Do I actually need it' question that I never asked before and ended up in debt til the Olympics! I opened my CC statements this morning and was entering the balances at 7.30am .... my OH thinks I'm having a breakdown!!!

Like others .... I know my debt isn't going up - it's only decreasing now and that feels soooooooo nice! Thanks for this 'feel good post'. :T

It's great in these hard times to know that we're getting in to less debt, not more! How many people in the UK can say that do you think? And how many of them are readers of this website?

Martin and his staff deserve a medal.

  • Totally agree with the OP!! I look forward so much more to having a NSD than to going shopping!! My habits have changed enormously! Everything I pick up in shops I really look at and debate whether I need it or not!

I look at friends of mine who 'haven't seen the light' and as much as I try to help it goes in one ear and out the other!! Yes they may have more clothes, better car and more of a social life - but I appreciate what I've got sooo much more!! And by the time I'm 25 they'll be in more debt and I'll have none!!

They think I'm crazy because I love spreadsheets!! Or for my weekly budget! It's funny how you don't even notice your habits changing! They're so drummed into me that I don't think (or hope) that I'll ever stop wanting to save rather than spend!
    Just keep swimming
  • I agree with everyone- it is so satisfying knowing the debt is going down. I think I'm getting a bit obsessed with NSDs at the moment but it is just such a nice feeling to get to the end of the day and no you've not frittered the pennies away.

    What a lovely post x x
