I keep mine in the fridge and they never turn green. They are poisonous when they turn green and should not be eaten.0

As Obukit says the green patches indicate that solanine has formed in the areas that have been exposed to the light.
The toxin can give you headaches, nausea and diarrhoea.
Keep your potatoes in a cool dark place to stop them sprouting and going green. If you buy unwashed potatoes from a farm shop etc, they will tend to keep longer than the washed varieties we buy in the supermarkets.0 -
as nessie1702 says, you'd be better to try to find a source of unwashed potatoes, a farm shop or something. I live alone too, but still buy potatoes by the sack (25kg) cos they last for months if they haven't been washed.0

Another fridge storer, they last for weeks and weeks. Used to chuck loads away but never have a problem now. Plus I can buy larger bags and save money.:hello:0

It's the light....the green is chlorophyll.
Remember that potatoes are in the same family as deadly nightshade, and that garden plant with the yellow fruits that's also very toxic.
If you wrap them in paper it keeps the light out but lets them breathe.
also, try meal planning to use up the amount of potatoes you buy in good tiem. if you get sick of eating potatoes every day, make some mash and freeze it.August grocery challenge: £50
Spent so far: £37.40 :A0 -
I use the Lakeland bag to store my potatoes and they stay shoot-free and don't go green for a very long time! :rotfl: wait wait... I don't mean the special 'potato bag' you got to buy, I meant their dark blue carrier bag!!
maybe cos its so thick and dark coloured, it stops the light getting it and I just loosely fold down the top so my spuds can still breathe...:D

Keeping them away from the light will stop them going green and slow down sprouting. A very thick paper bag or black cotton back would be good. Anything but plastic which makes them slimy.0
