Need help with TV diagnosis

Options
Hi,

My 24" philips TV (5 yrs old) has suddenly decided to play up.

It does differ each time you turn it on (may take 5 mins or may take half an hour) but after a certain amount of time the colour turns very green and goes very dull also. Turn it off and back on again and the colour is fine for a few more minutes until it happens again.

I am thinking it is thermal, but really have no idea and can't get anyone to lok at it without paying £40+.

Shall I just say enough is enough and get a new one (plasma tv's look fantastic) or is it worth investiating?

Hope someone knows what this problem may be.

Thanks

the same thing happened to two of mine. started going green then id turn it off then id do it again, after a while it started turning itself off when it felt like it and one day set on fire. this happened with two different sets, seems to be with overuse (ie left on all day every day), be careful.

  • Thanks pumpa,

Do you think it is not repairable then? Perhaps I need to get a new one sorted quick.

It is not on all day every day, but with two kids and a Big Brother addict in the house it is on alot of the time.

Ours did this recently then one day just went bang and never switched on again. Its the cathode thing or something. There was no hope for ours, doesn't sound like there's much hope for yours:(
  • thanks pug,

How long did it last. Ours has been doing it for about a fortnight now. The ast thing I want is for it to catch fire.

It was a matter of days, I'm afraid. Is there a phillips helpline you could ring, just try and gage if its repairable and if its worth your while?

Sounds as if your tube is the problem, one of the three guns is failing so in all probability a new tube may be required (which would cost more than the set is worth). Of course it could just be a dry joint somewhere.
5 years is not a bad live for a TV,so youv'e probably had your monies worth and you can get far more for you money TV wise now.
In the interim always unplug the TV when you retire for the night.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • It's not a 24PW6005/6006 is it ? I had one that did exactly the same - luckily I'd bought it at CostCo and it was only 33 months into the 3 year warranty and I got my dosh back to buy a Sony :)

if youve got kids i wouldnt risk it just get a new one, mine went through the stage yours did before it caught fire and my son was in the room at the time- luckily i ripped the plug out before it did any damage and put it out the back straightaway.
